Legacy Modernisation

Legacy Application Modernisation in Dubai, UAE

Part of Digital Product Engineering

Software that still runs the business but has become expensive and frightening to touch. We start with a paid audit and an honest recommendation — sometimes that you should keep what you have and spend the money elsewhere.

What we build

Legacy Modernisation capabilities

Six areas we deliver in production — not a slide deck of things we could theoretically attempt.

Technical audit

Code health, architecture, security posture, dependency and platform-version risk, and a costed view of rescue versus rebuild.

Strangler-pattern migration

New system grown around the old one, routing traffic across piece by piece, so the business keeps running throughout.

Version and platform upgrades

Off unsupported PHP, .NET, Java, Node and database versions, closing the security exposure that comes with them.

Cloud re-platforming

Move to AWS, Azure or in-region UAE hosting where data residency requires it, with cost modelled before migration.

Safety net first

Characterisation tests built around undocumented behaviour before anything is refactored, so regressions surface in CI rather than production.

Knowledge capture

Documentation and handover so the system stops being a single person's dependency and becomes something a team can own.

UAE context

The 2011-to-2016 estate

A great deal of UAE business software was built during the growth years either in-house or by agencies that no longer exist, and much of it is now on runtimes that stopped receiving security patches years ago. The recurring pattern we are called into is recognisable: the original developer has left the country, there is no test suite, deployment is manual and undocumented, and the system quietly handles data that now falls under Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on personal data protection. That combination makes a rewrite feel like the only option — and sometimes it is. Often it is not, and the responsible first step is an audit that puts real numbers against both paths before anyone commits to the larger one.

Delivered across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and Al Ain — and for clients operating from Business Bay, DIFC, DMCC Crypto Centre, Dubai Internet City.

Our process

How your Legacy Modernisation project runs

01
Week 1–2

Requirements & Planning

We interrogate the brief before we price it — commercial goals, regulatory perimeter, integration reality and the constraints nobody wrote down. You leave discovery with a scoped backlog, architecture, fixed price and a delivery date we intend to keep.

02
Week 2–5

Wireframe & Design

Information architecture, wireframes, then a full design system in Figma with real content and every state designed — empty, loading, error, RTL. Prototypes go in front of real users before engineering starts.

03
Week 4–20

Development

Two-week sprints against a visible board. Every increment is deployed to a staging URL you can open on your own phone, so progress is something you use rather than something we describe.

04
Continuous

Debugging & Testing

Automated unit, integration and end-to-end suites in CI, plus manual QA on real devices, load testing, accessibility audit and — for anything touching value — independent security review.

05
Launch week

MVP Launch

Staged rollout with monitoring, alerting and rollback rehearsed in advance. Store submissions, DNS, SSL, analytics and search infrastructure are handled by us, not handed to you as a checklist.

06
Ongoing

Maintenance & Growth

SLA-backed support, dependency and security patching, performance budgets held to, and a quarterly roadmap review that ties the next build to what the data is actually telling you.

Questions

Legacy Modernisation FAQs

Cost, timelines, compliance and the questions clients in the UAE ask us most.

Should we rebuild or modernise?

It depends on how much of the existing behaviour is still correct and how much institutional knowledge is embedded in it. Our audit puts numbers against both paths — cost, duration, risk and the security exposure of doing nothing. We recommend against our own larger invoice when modernising is genuinely the better call, and we will say so plainly.

Can you work without the original developers?

Yes, and that is the usual situation. We work from the running system, the code and whatever documentation exists, building characterisation tests to pin down actual behaviour before changing anything.

Will the business have to stop?

No. Strangler-pattern migration routes functionality across incrementally, so the old and new systems run side by side and traffic moves piece by piece. Cutovers are rehearsed with a tested rollback path.

How much does an audit cost?

A technical audit typically runs AED 25,000 to AED 60,000 depending on system size, and takes two to four weeks. It produces a written report with prioritised findings, a costed remediation plan and a clear rescue-versus-rebuild recommendation — and it is credited against the build if you proceed with us.

What if the system holds personal data?

That raises the urgency. Unpatched runtimes handling personal data are a live exposure under Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021, and the audit covers data handling, access control, encryption and retention alongside code health so you can see the compliance risk, not just the technical debt.
